Scripture: Psalm 118:24 and Job 12:7-9 ESV
My favorite part of the day is my first cup of coffee. While it’s still dark outside, I sneak into the kitchen as quietly as a mouse, trying not to wake the kids. I pour hot, vanilla-flavored coffee into my favorite white mug, then stir in sugar and cream. Afterward, I quietly return to my bedroom.
I cherish this first cup of coffee for many reasons, but above all, I love it because it prompts me to praise my Heavenly Father first thing in the morning.
On my way to the kitchen, I hear the birds' morning greeting from my front yard. Their song makes me smile and thank God for the heavenly music created by His creatures. In the book of Job, we are told to look to God’s creation to understand that every good and perfect gift comes from His hands. In Job 12:7-9, it says, “But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?”
As I slowly sip my coffee, I’m reminded that God created the coffee bean. He knew His children would roast the beans and add hot water to enjoy the brewed beverage. I offer praise for this seemingly simple creation because God made it with love—both for me and for you.
Next, I sit in my praying chair. This small cup of coffee has now led me to praise God for all the little blessings of the morning—a hot shower, clean clothes, audiobooks to help me grow, and, most importantly, my quiet prayer time with Him. I like to say that I have coffee with Jesus each morning.
Once I’m settled in my chair, I thank God for always being present during my morning coffee. He never fails to show up.
Dear reader, I don’t know what your morning ritual looks like. Maybe, like me, you enjoy a steaming cup of coffee. Or, if you’re like my husband, it’s a mug of green tea. Whatever helps you start your day, I hope it brings you closer to your Heavenly Father.
Reflection Questions and Path to Action:
What is your go-to beverage first thing in the morning?
How can you praise God through this simple morning routine?
One day this week, try to listen to the birds first thing in the morning. See how their song speaks to your heart about your Creator.

Have coffee with Jesus!
