5-Tips for How to Develop an Environment of Peace & Calm
As a stay-at-home mom, I've found that small, intentional actions can go a long way in creating an environment of peace and calm at home. Here are five tried-and-true tips you can easily incorporate into your daily routine to help set a soothing and peaceful tone.
Tip #1: Let there be light!
Scripture: Genesis 1:3 NIV
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Every morning, before the kids are out of bed, I quietly walk into the main living space of our home and turn on four lamps. Then, I prop open the plantation shutters in the sitting room and pull back the curtains by the kitchen table. I’m a big fan of light! As we read in today’s scripture, Genesis 1:3, God created light—therefore, we can conclude it is good. Finding the perfect mix of natural sunlight and lamplight helps create a warm and comfortable environment.
Tip #2: Diffuse Oils
Scripture: Luke 7:38 NIV
As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
I began diffusing oils when I was a classroom teacher. There were multiple reasons for doing this–to hide the scent the children brought in after recess in Florida, to ward off illness, to give the kids one more rule (don’t touch the diffuser!). Above all, the quiet hum of the diffuser and the aroma that filled the air made for a calm atmosphere. Every morning (after turning on my two classroom lamps) I would fill up my diffuser with freshwater and drop in essential oils. My typical blend consisted of cinnamon, ginger, and lemon. It made me think of fall all year! After leaving the classroom, I carried this habit into my home. It sets a nice ambience for our day.
The Bible references oils as a way to show hospitality (see Luke 7:46) and love (see Luke 7:47). We all desire to show our families the greatest love and hospitality.
Tip #3: Coffee Shop Jazz
Scripture: Psalm 105:2, Psalm 95:1, Hebrews 2:12
I love playing soft, instrumental music throughout the day—it makes me feel like I’m spending the day at an expensive spa! Sometimes, during morning chores and before the boys begin their studies, I’ll put on Christian worship music. It’s more upbeat and has lyrics, so it works well during busier moments. But when it’s time to wind down, we switch to low-volume coffee shop jazz. And thanks to YouTube, you can even choose from beautiful scenic videos to play on the screen for an extra calming touch.
The Bible is full of verses about singing praise to God Almighty—Psalm 105:2, Psalm 95:1, and Hebrews 2:12 are just a few that remind us how powerful music can be in lifting our hearts to Him.
Tip #4: Bring on the Greenery!
Scripture: Psalm 96:12-13 NIV
Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth.
I love having lots of real plants inside my home! Right now, I have seven plants placed in different rooms throughout the house. I started buying greenery a few years ago and instantly loved how it makes the space feel—fresh, clean, and beautiful.
Each morning, I open the windows to let natural light shine on the plants. Being out in nature has always made me feel closer to God. Marveling at His beautiful creation fills me with joy, and bringing just a small piece of that beauty indoors brings a smile to my face.
I especially love how Scripture talks about all of God’s creation worshiping Him. Just think—trees, plants, and flowers, all praising their Creator. It brings God joy when we look at His creation and smile.
Tip #5: Linen Spray
A few months ago, my sister and I had a girls' morning out. We grabbed coffee and strolled through several boutiques in the center of town. In one of the shops, we stumbled upon a display of linen sprays. The packaging was inviting, and the test bottles practically shouted, Try me!
After sampling some of the most luxurious scents, we settled on one called Quail Call. Now, as part of my morning routine, after I make the beds, I spritz the linen spray across the top of the comforter and pillows. I also spray some on my couches after fluffing the pillows. The scent wafts through the air, and it's absolutely delightful.
Much like in Tip #2, the Bible references oils and perfumes as expensive and precious. God created us with the ability to experience scent as a way to bring joy into our lives. Let us praise Him when we encounter something truly spectacular.
Here's where you can buy the linen spray:
