The Gift of Gathering

Updated: Dec 9, 2025

There is a sacred strength God builds in us when we choose to gather with fellow believers. For many of us, our quiet time with the Lord is familiar—a cherished rhythm of prayer, Scripture, and stillness. But something different happens when we open God’s living Word together. The Lord uses the voices, wisdom, and stories of others to sharpen us, comfort us, and send us back into the world as brighter lights for Christ.

Over the last few months, I’ve experienced this firsthand. Sitting among a group of seasoned Christian women—listening, learning, laughing, even pausing in silent thought—has taught me something I didn’t fully grasp before: community shapes us in ways solitude cannot. Their perspectives help me see Scripture from angles I would never have considered on my own. Their stories give me courage. Their support sends me out feeling strengthened and seen.

God designed us this way. His Word reminds us:

  • “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17

  • “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” — Matthew 18:20

  • “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds… not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” — Hebrews 10:24-25

When we open Scripture in community, something beautiful happens: Our understanding deepens, our faith expands, and our hearts soften. We hear God’s truth through the testimonies of others. We find accountability, friendship, and purpose. And we discover how essential it is to link arms in a world that desperately needs Christ’s light.

If you don’t currently have a group, find one. Pray for one. Start one. God delights in bringing His people together. And if you do have one, treasure it. Show up. Participate. Let the wisdom of others shape you, and allow your own story to bless them in return.

Spiritual growth was never meant to be a solo journey. God’s Church is a family, and gathering with fellow believers is one of the most potent ways He draws us closer to Himself.

Reflection Questions and Path to Action

  1. Who are the believers God has placed in your life who help sharpen your faith? How can you be more intentional about meeting with them?

  2. When have you felt spiritually strengthened after reading Scripture with others?

  3. If you don’t currently have a group, what steps might God be nudging you to take to find or form one?

  4. How does Hebrews 10:24-25 challenge or encourage you today?

What does it reveal about the importance of spiritual community?

  5. Pray this week for God to reveal how He wants you to spend time in community with others.

I enjoyed reading this article about meeting with other Christians. It made me reflect upon my group of church members who join together every Friday morning to pray for the unborn, that they will be protected in their mother's womb and eventually see the light of day promised to them by God. I know we make a difference by our prayers and supplication to the Lord, especially in a group setting. A prayer group can be started for many different purposes - the end of wars, peace among men and among all nations, for the salvation of all souls, for all Christians everywhere, for our country and our governing leaders, for fractured families, and many other petitions we can bri…
